HATUN MACHAY - JATUN MACHAY

Located 2 hours from the city of Huaraz is the “rock forest,” of Hatun Machay, a unique and recently discovered area to rock climb. Hatun Machay boasts a wide variety of single pitch routes, from 5.7 to 5.13 (5 to 8a) as well as ample bouldering and seemingly limitless potential for new wall and boulder routes. In addition,  Hatun Machay is an ideal place to go hiking and is home to caves with ancient carvings and paintings.

THE SPHINX

One of the most famous big walls in the Andes, The Sphinx is home to classic long trad routes on high-quality, clean granite and only a 4 hour hike from Paron Lake. It is the perfect place for climbers looking to test their endurance on beautiful rock; the routes climb almost half a vertical mile on what is considered to be one of the most spectacular big walls in the world.

The Route of 85 is the most common route, rated at V, 5.10/A1 o 7°  it climbs 750 meters using  traditional protection with only bolted belay stations.

 
 
 
 


CHANCOS

Chancos is a rural village 5 minutes in car from the town of Marcara, where 8 easy to moderate bolted routes can be found on a 20 foot high rock wall right off of the road. This is the ideal place for beginning climbers.Furthermore, Chancos is home to some of the best hot springs and in the area, making for a great excursion of climbing and relaxing.

 
 
 
 


MONTERREY

Monterrey, located only 30 minutes from Huaraz, offers a variety of sport climbing routes, and is also a great place to practice anchor building, rappelling and easy traditional climbing. The town of  Monterrey has a small resort which offers a large hot spring pool as well as individual baths, perfect for relaxing after a few hours of climbing.

 
 
 
 


LLACA VALLEY

Llaca is located in a beautiful valley which surrounds a glacier and the glacial lake of Llaca, with views of the dramatic peaks Ocllapalca, Ranrapalca and Vallunaraju.  The majority of the routes  range in difficulty from 5.9 to 5.11, the classic route being the five pitch 150 m “Mision Lunatica,” (The Lunar Mission).
